MayPort-CG guard Shawn Klabo looks for an open teammate during MPCG’s 49-46 win over Park River/Fordville-Lankin. The Patriots trailed by 16 in the first half of the Dec. 17 contest but rallied to win by three.

MAYVILLE – Down 14 with halftime looming, MayPort-CG and new head coach Taylor Kunkel didn’t need something big to happen to claw back in their season opener.

The Patriots needed something big to leave.

Park River/Fordville-Lankin 6-foot-6 center Sam Hagen picked up his second foul and went to the bench with 3:04 left before half in the Aggies’ Dec. 17 opener against MPCG.

The Patriots caught fire with Hagen on the bench, outscoring the Aggies 13-1 to end the quarter and carrying that momentum into the second half to pull out a 49-46 win over PR/F-L in Kunkel’s first game on the bench.

“Getting (Hagen) out of the game was huge. He’s an unbelievable athlete,” Kunkel said.
