NORTHWOOD, N.D. – Head coach Stacy Hanson and the MayPort-CG Patriots had the momentum on their side.

The No. 2-seeded Patriots had hammered their way to a dramatic 25-23 first-set win over the top-seeded Thompson Tommies in the Region 2 title game Nov. 11 at Northwood High School.

The music was blaring. Hanson’s players were pumped. MPCG’s fans were in a frenzy.

And then Summer Hegg changed everything.

Hegg, the Tommies’ 6-foot middle hitter, recorded a game-high 22 kills to lead Thompson to a four-set (23-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-16) win over the Patriots in the Region 2 championship game.

The victory propelled the Tommies (35-5) to Thursday’s state Class B tournament in Bismarck and ended the season for MPCG (18-7-4) in disappointing fashion.
