Peter Dryburgh drives to the basket

Hillsboro-Central Valley junior Peter Dryburgh, left, drives to the basket against Ada-Borup-West (Minn.) senior Evan DeVos Monday evening at the Hillsboro Events Center. Dryburgh and the Burros fell 61-41 to the Cougars.

Decked out in ugly Christmas sweaters during warmups, Ada-Borup-West (Minn.) left the Hillsboro Events Center on Monday in a holly, jolly spirit.

The Cougars upset No. 2-ranked Hillsboro-Central Valley 61-41 behind a game-high 23 points from Cadyn Dahl.

“(A-B-W) took it to us with a young team that basically just outworked, outplayed and outhustled us,” H-CV head coach Elliot Rotvold said after the loss.

“We were kind of reading our own headlines and our own clippings thinking that we’re better than we really are and (A-B-W) definitely showed us that we are not as good as we thought we were.”

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the first quarter as neither team had a lead larger than three.

H-CV (2-1) trailed 16-14 after the first quarter but the Cougars turned up the pressure in the second quarter with their full- and half-court press.
