Parker Gallagher and Sam Preston

Hillsboro-Central Valley sprinter Parker Gallagher prepares to receive a baton from teammate Sam Preston during a relay race Saturday in Hillsboro.

Kaden Pastian needed a single meet this season to qualify for the state Class B track and field meet in the shot put.

Besides working to improve for the state meet still weeks away in Bismarck, what could he achieve?

A national ranking.

Pastian set a new personal record with a throw of 61 feet, 10 inches April 22 in Mayville to rank No. 8 in the nation.

He followed that throw with a first-place toss 60 feet, 1 inch Saturday in Hillsboro.

The senior’s throw blew past his closest competitor by more than 10 feet at Saturday’s meet at the Hillsboro Sports Complex with more than 20 teams present.

Pastian also notched a season record in the discus, throwing 174 feet, 10 inches to win the event by more than 35 feet.
