Raina Satrom and Tim Spurgeon

MayPort-CG freshman catcher Raina Satrom, center, gets checked on by head coach Tim Spurgeon after crossing home plate against Northern Cass on Monday. Satrom had been struck in the back of the head by a throw while standing on third but raced home after the ball ricocheted off her helmet.

MAYVILLE – MayPort-CG and head coach Tim Spurgeon relied on two key hits to pull off a 7-5 win Monday over Northern Cass in Mayville.

One hit went fewer than 6 feet. The other ricocheted off the head of Spurgeon’s catcher.

Freshman second baseman Maysa Larson legged out an RBI bunt single to score teammate Rylee Satrom, allowing MPCG to add the go-ahead run and break a 5-5 tie in the fifth.

One inning earlier, Raina Satrom raced home after getting hit in the back of the head on a pickoff attempt at third base.

The freshman catcher bolted for home and gave MPCG a pivotal fifth run in a back-and-forth slugfest in a matchup between two teams with legitimate state tourney hopes.
