MayPort-CG freshman Rylee Satrom swings at a pitch

MayPort-CG freshman Rylee Satrom swings at a pitch in an April 16 home game against Thompson. The Patriots fell to the Tommies 12-3 in the northeast sub-region contest.

After a dominating season opener, MayPort-CG’s fast-pitch team dropped three in a row April 15-17 in hard-fought losses to Grafton, Thompson and top-ranked Central Cass.

The losses tested the Patriots’ pitching, defense and balance on offense, according to head coach Tim Spurgeon.

“To start the season bing, bing, bing like that it was tough,” Spurgeon said. “Because in your first games you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to set your defenses and who’s going to play.”

“It was tough on (our) pitchers, but luckily I have four really good starting pitchers I can rotate in. … Overall, I was happy with our defense, we just need to get our bats going.”
