Tanner Lundwall skates against Bottineau-Rugby

MayPort Area forward Tanner Lundwall, left, shown above in the Ice Dawgs’ 4-0 win over Bottineau-Rugby on Dec. 11, had a hat trick against Prairie Centre on Tuesday in Benson, Minn.

MayPort Area finished a two-day road trip in Benson, Minn., with one win and a tie at the MBA Storm Holiday Classic.

The Ice Dawgs (5-4-2) defeated Prairie Centre 10-3 on Tuesday and then tied with Morris-Benson Area 3-3 on Wednesday.

MayPort Area head coach Chase Knudson said he switched up the Ice Dawgs’ lines against Prairie Centre and the move gave his team a fresher look.

“I brought Tanner Lundwall down and Noah Mehus down with Shawn O’Hearn on that second line,” Knudson said Wednesday night.

“So, we just switched one guy and bumped Walker McGillis up. It’s not a demotion for Tanner or Noah, it’s just a new look. And it worked out really well, so we stuck with it.”

McGillis and Lundwall finished with hat tricks against Prairie Centre as both teams combined for seven first-period goals.

McGillis scored all three of his goals in the opening period and the Ice Dawgs had a 5-2 advantage after the first frame.

Lundwall gave MayPort Area a 6-2 lead with 8:47 to play in the second period off an Andrew Aarsvold assist.
