A frantic final 100 meters from Christian Brist saw the Hillsboro-Central Valley sophomore take first Saturday in the Hillsboro Earlybird cross-country meet.
Brist held off a late charge by Kindred’s Cole Campbell after the two battled for 5 kilometers at the Goose River Golf Course.
“Cole is a really good kid and a probable high all-state runner,” said H-CV cross-country coach Kirk Zink.
“To see Christian in a spot like that is nice, and then the mental part … to finish the race strong and pace himself, too, was good.”
Brist, the defending East Region champion, finished in 16:56 Saturday and was one of four Burros who finished in the top 20 out of 52 runners.
H-CV juniors Henry Nelson and John Kaldor took 15th and 16th, respectively, while fellow junior Jacob Wright was two spots back in 18th in 18:55.
Sophomore Adam Smith placed just outside the top 20 with a time of 19:30, good for 23rd.
The Burro boys finished second overall with a team score of 73 behind first-place Kindred’s 57 points.
