Krista Ackerman attacks

Hillsboro-Central Valley junior Krista Ackerman sends a ball across the net in a match against Park River/Fordville-Lankin earlier this year. Ackerman finished with four kills Oct. 7 against Cavalier.

Cavalier looked to be on its heels at home against Hillsboro-Central Valley in volleyball action Oct. 7.

Down 19-16 in the first set, the Tornadoes called a timeout to regroup and Cavalier junior Eden Carrier did the rest.

The Tornadoes took the wind out of the Burros’ sails, eking out a 27-25 win in the first set before sweeping H-CV 25-15, 25-12 in the final two sets.

Carrier led all attackers with 17 kills in the contest as the Burros, 8-8 overall, settled into sixth place in the Region 2 standings with five games remaining.

“Cavalier just came on and swung, and our block maybe didn’t close,” said H-CV coach Katie Kolness. “It was just our total defense, all the way around.”

Burros junior outside hitter Mataya Arends led her squad with six kills in the matchup.
