COOPERSTOWN, N.D. – Anna Strand almost didn’t run in her penultimate high school race.

The MayPort-CG senior standout was battling a sinus infection the week leading up to Saturday’s East Region cross-country meet at Cooperstown Country Club.

However, Strand told her coach she was running and saw her Patriots team place fourth at the regional with a score of 100 points.

“She was not feeling good, and we weren’t sure if we’d race her,” said MPCG coach Wendy Garrett-Mehus. “But she wasn’t going to lose her last regional.”

Strand, a state nominee for senior athlete of the year, finished well off her personal best time, taking 29th in 21:29.1, but got to watch freshman teammate Tatum Mehus pull away to take fourth overall at the meet.
