Xyler Carlson against Maple River

MayPort-CG running back Xyler Carlson has his jersey pulled by a Maple River defender during a run at midfield in the Patriots’s 54-22 win Oct. 7. Carlson led MPCG with 129 yards rushing in the victory.

MAYVILLE – Head coach Adam Sola and the No. 4-ranked MayPort-CG Patriots (7-1) wrapped up their regular season with a 54-22 wire-to-wire win over rival Maple River (5-3) on Oct. 7.

The Patriots’ victory over the Raiders allowed MPCG to lock up the Region 2 crown and a first-round bye heading into the 9-man playoffs, although the senior night win came with a cost.

After bolting out to an early 32-0 first-quarter lead, the Patriots saw all-state running back Ethan Bergstrom and senior wideout Jake Hutter hobble to the sidelines with injuries.

Sola said he remains hopeful both players will return in the playoffs. The fifth-year head coach credited his seniors for pulling out a win over the Raiders despite the first-half exits of Bergstrom and Hutter.
