Sawyer Owens

Hillsboro-Central Valley seventh-grader Sawyer Owens, above, takes down Grafton’s Kruiser Burns Saturday at a round-robin tournament in Grafton, N.D. Owens took first place at 106 pounds.

Sawyer Owens wrestles at 106 pounds, but the Hillsboro-Central Valley seventh-grader is pulling more than his weight.

Owens went 5-0 with five pins to take first place at a six-team individual tournament Saturday in Grafton, N.D.

The first-year Burros wrestler pinned Central Cass’ Evan Volk in 1:13 to cap his day.

“Sawyer had some tough competition,” said H-CV coach Trace Bakke. “You could tell he was kind of nervous about it. He was antsy to just wrestle.”

Owens pinned Grafton’s Kruiser Burns at the four-minute mark of his third-round matchup.

That win was key, Bakke said, as the H-CV coach expects Burns could be a state placewinner this year.

“Sawyer took it to him,” Bakke said. “He made a couple of small mistakes here and there, but that’s going to happen, just being a seventh-grader.”
