Hillsboro-Central Valley wrestling coach Trace Bakke expected Sawyer Owens to have some growing pains early this season.
But after an undefeated past week, the eighth-grader is showing few struggles after bumping up to 120 pounds from 106 pounds a year ago.
Owens pinned Oakes freshman Zane Awender in 5:26 and added a 57-second win over Kindred seventh-grader Fisher Johnson in Tuesday’s triangular dual meet in Kindred, N.D.
The Burros 120-pounder also went 5-0 in five dual matches at the H-CV dual tournament Saturday at the Hillsboro Events Center.
“Sawyer’s been handling it very well. Shockingly well,” Bakke said Wednesday.
“He’s been adjusting well and getting the matches done. That’s the Sawyer I know.”
Owens’ win over Johnson Tuesday night contributed to the Burros’ 37-20 team victory over Kindred.
