Grace Koshney tips a ball

MayPort-CG senior Grace Koshney, right, tips a ball past the block of Grafton’s Julia Dusek and Anna Carignan in the Patriots’ 3-0 loss to the Spoilers in the Region 2 semifinals Thursday, Nov. 12.

GRAFTON, N.D. – Grafton’s experienced lineup spoiled an upset bid last Thursday.

The 10th-ranked Spoilers volleyball team held off MayPort-CG 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 in the semifinals of the Region 2 tournament Thursday, Nov. 12.

The loss ended the season for the Patriots, seeded third in the tournament, with a 13-8 record

“We were trying to attack with our right side and we just didn’t have those opportunities,” said Patriots head coach Stacy Hanson. “We showed some inexperience and maybe lack of confidence sometimes. That’s just how volleyball is.”

MPCG came into the Region 2 showdown 0-2 against the Spoilers this year.

While the Patriots had chances to take sets – including a 20-18 lead late in the third – Grafton stayed poised in big moments.

Led by seven seniors and six juniors, Grafton took advantage of MPCG’s miscues, Hanson said.

“We had our opportunities and didn’t capitalize on those,” Hanson said. “They had streaks and we had streaks and we just didn’t finish those enough.”
