LARIMORE, N.D. – Head coach Taylor Kunkel and the MayPort-CG Patriots were without their big man in the middle Tuesday in Larimore.
MPCG 6-foot-6 junior forward Landon Koenig was a surprise scratch from Tuesday night’s starting lineup after tweaking his back in warmups.
Even without Koenig patrolling the paint, the Patriots still had enough firepower in reserve and blew by the Polar Bears 72-39, allowing MPCG to pick up its first win of the season.
Kunkel wasn’t thrilled with the start from his team – the Patriots (1-1) led 10-6 after one – but he credited his club with continuing to attack the Polar Bears’ defense when shots weren’t dropping.
“It was a little ugly but we pulled it out,” Kunkel said afterward. “I’m proud of the team. It wasn’t the prettiest but we got the job done and picked up two region points.”
