Jackson Anderson motions

Hillsboro-Central Valley senior Jackson Anderson, right, motions to a teammate in Saturday’s afternoon game against Central Cass.

Senior forward Josh Dixon scored his 1,000th career point and junior guard Jake Deutsch sank a buzzer-beater to lead No. 6 Central Cass to a 63-61 win over Hillsboro-Central Valley on Saturday.

The Burros (7-5) struggled to break the Squirrels’ (11-2) full-court press in the first half and trailed 29-22 at halftime before rallying in the second half to take a three-point lead with a minute left.

But Deutsch drilled a 3-pointer from the left baseline and followed with his last-second shot seconds later after an H-CV turnover to help Central Cass exit the Hillsboro Events Center with a win.

“One play doesn’t beat you,” H-CV head coach Elliot Rotvold said afterward.

“It’s the end of the third quarter letting them throw it over the top when we told them to keep it front. It’s the 12 of 14 turnovers in the first half. It’s the throwing it away that comes back to get you.”

The loss spoiled impressive outings from forwards Caden Waterworth (13 points) and Jacob Brandt (9 points), who helped the Burros rally and pile up 39 second-half points Saturday.
