John Geray wrestling

Hillsboro-Central Valley junior John Geray finished first in the 152-pound weight class in Saturday’s wrestling meet at Cavalier (N.D.) High School.

CAVALIER, N.D. – Led by John Geray, Hillsboro-Central Valley’s wrestlers picked up four top-three finishes in their final regular-season tournament Saturday in Cavalier.

The junior stood atop the podium at 152 pounds to win the Region 2 Invitational – the Burros’ final competition prior to the state tournament Feb. 18 at the Fargodome.

Teammates Henry Nelson and Barrett Willison joined Geray with podium finishes, taking second in their respective weight classes while seventh-grader Carson Kozojed placed third at 106.

All eyes were on Geray Saturday, however.

The wrestler rattled off three straight wins, including a 6-4 championship win over Larimore’s Eric Hoffman, to claim the lone first-place finish for H-CV.

“In his finals match, he lost to that guy earlier in the year, and John did a really good job at stopping him,” said H-CV coach Trace Bakke.
