RURAL HUNTER, N.D. – Sawyer Satrom proved throughout his high school baseball career at MayPort-CG that he’s a big-game pitcher.
He reminded Patriots fans in the District 6 American Legion championship game that he’s not too shabby a shortstop, either.
Satrom pulled off a jaw-dropping double play with the bases packed against Thompson Post 181 on July 22 to help Mayville advance to the North Dakota Class B American Legion tournament in Oakes.
Satrom snagged a bullet off the bat of Thompson’s Ryan Strande and dove head first to tag Tyler Cunningham on his way back to second base to keep the Tommies scoreless in the fourth inning.
Satrom’s unassisted double play and a strong outing from right-hander Landon Koenig, who came through with a tie-breaking triple in the fifth, propelled the Patriots to an 8-4 win over Thompson, punching Mayville’s ticket to state for the second time in three years.
“It was one of those games you live for playing summer ball,” said Patriots head coach Taylor Kunkel. “The boys will remember this game for a long time.”
