Noella Kritzberger pitches

Hillsboro-Central Valley senior pitcher Noella Kritzberger fires a pitch against Hankinson/Tri-State/Lidgerwood Tuesday in Hankinson. The Burros fell 14-11 after a late Pirate rally.

HANKINSON, N.D. – Hankinson/Tri-State/Lidgerwood erased an 8-1 deficit with a nine-run sixth inning to hand Hillsboro-Central Valley a season-opening 14-11 loss Tuesday.

Despite outhitting the Pirates 13-4 over seven innings, the Burros’ defense struggled in the cold, rainy weather late in the game.

“Offensively, I thought we’d do a little bit better than we did, but we still have a couple of hitters that need to come around,” H-CV head coach Cory Erickson said.

“Defensively, we just started to fall apart after it really started to rain and get really cold around the fifth inning.”

Senior second baseman Tatiana Egan got the scoring started for the Burros (0-1) in the top of the second inning with an RBI triple to deep right field to score eighth-grader Megan Ensign from first base.
