Jillian Larson attacks against H-CV

Jillian Larson, a junior middle hitter for the MayPort-CG Patriots, sends an attack toward Hillsboro-Central Valley juniors Mataya Arends, left, and Sydni Culp Monday.

MAYVILLE – Senior Kalynn Olson notched her 1,000th career assist in front of her hometown fans to help MayPort-CG wrap up its regular season with a straight-set win Monday.

Already having locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region 2 tournament, Olson’s Patriots beat Hillsboro-Central Valley 25-14, 25-13 and 25-10 inside the MPCG gym.

Patriots head coach Stacy Hanson tried to keep Olson’s pending milestone under wraps – she had 992 assists entering Monday’s game – although her teammates knew she was on the brink of history.

“I never talked to Kalynn about it but I did tell her mom,” Hanson said. “You could tell some of the girls were focused on getting the ball to Kalynn but I told them to just focus on the game.”

The advice appeared to pay off for the Patriots.

After trading points back and forth in the early going, MPCG pulled away to record double-digit wins in each of Monday’s three sets thanks to Olson, who finished with 20 assists.

“Kalynn is a leader but a quiet kid. She leads by example,” Hanson said. “She’s a captain and been a starter for us since she was a sophomore, so I was happy for her tonight.”
