COOPERSTOWN, N.D. – Saturday’s regional could not have gone much better for head coach Kirk Zink’s runners.

In the lead-up to today’s (Friday) state Class B cross-country meet, the Hillsboro-Central Valley boys and girls teams each finished runner-up in the East Region meet at Cooperstown Country Club.

Burros sophomore Christian Brist finished runner-up in the boys 5-kilometer race and led a pack of three all-region athletes for the H-CV boys, while the girls team landed four runners on the all-region list.

Brist, last year’s East Region individual champion, lost to Kindred senior Ethan Schaffer by fewer than seven seconds after running stride for stride together for most of the race.

“I know he was disappointed, but he lost to a really good senior up for senior athlete of the year,” Zink said. “He has nothing to be disappointed about.”

Brist and the Burros boys took second to Kindred, ranked one spot ahead of H-CV in the latest statewide poll.
