Ben Thompson against Craig Anderson

Hillsboro-Central Valley sophomore Ben Thompson pins MayPort-CG’s Craig Anderson at 160 pounds in Tuesday evening’s dual at the Hillsboro Events Center.

Traill County’s wrestlers tangled on the mat for a triangular meet heading into the final four weeks of the season.

Hillsboro-Central Valley controlled a slate of matches against MayPort-CG in a 60-18 win Tuesday night at the Hillsboro Events Center.

The Burros picked up the Region 2 dual win by earning pins in five of the match’s seven contests and adding forfeits at 120, 132, 138, 170 and 285 pounds.

“I thought we wrestled just fine,” said H-CV head coach Rob Owens. “We had some kids that felt like they should win and went out and did it.”

Top-ranked 145-pounder Henry Nelson, a Burros senior, topped MPCG’s Jaylen Harstad with a pin in 1:25, and H-CV junior Carter Iverson added a pin in 2:20 over MPCG’s Josiah Campbell at 182.

Ben Thompson, Jack Mattson and Carson Kozojed also added pins for H-CV, which jumped out to a 30-0 lead in the dual thanks to three forfeits.

“People didn’t make weight, so that messed up our plan for moving kids around,” said Patriots coach Gary Mueller. “If kids don’t make weight, we don’t have the option to move kids up, so we couldn’t fill the weights.”

Kozojed, a freshman 126-pounder, went up 10-3 in the second period before pinning eighth-grader Maddix Moch in 3:07.
