Mataya Arends goes up for a shot

Hillsboro-Central Valley junior Mataya Arends, center, attempts to score over Drayton/Valley-Edinburg sophomore Hailey Berg (34) in Tuesday’s game at the Hillsboro Events Center. The Burros outscored the Titans 30-15 to pick up their first win of the 2021-22 winter season.

Mataya Arends has had a slow start to her junior season but on Tuesday she flipped a switch.

The 5-foot-8 center made a handful of positive plays for Hillsboro-Central Valley and finished with a team-high eight points in the Burros’ 30-15 win over Drayton/Valley-Edinburg (0-2) on Tuesday.

“She played really great, so we are excited to see that and all the great things she’s going to do,” H-CV head coach Hayleigh Lautt said Wednesday.

It was the Burros’ first victory of the early season and all 13 players on the Burros roster saw the court.

H-CV (1-2) trailed the Titans 5-2 with 2:47 to go in the first quarter but ended the first half on a 9-4 run after a few buckets by freshmen Kennedy Olsen and Carsi Hatlestad to hold an 11-9 advantage at the break.

Lautt said while her team had the first-half lead, “the big thing was we weren’t taking smart shots. We were just forcing up the first shot we saw, so we had to work on that and find the best shot in the second half.”
