Raymond Schlichtmann

Raymond Richard Schlichtmann, 87, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Hillsboro, N.D. He was born Sept. 26, 1933 to John Schlichtmann and Olga Huemoeller Stanley Schlichtmann. He was the tenth of eleven children.

Raymond was baptized into the Christian faith on Nov. 5, 1933 and confirmed on May 16, 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Hillsboro. Raymond graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1951. He worked on the family farm before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served from 1954 to 1956. 

He returned to Hillsboro after being honorably discharged from the army. He married Sharon Biel on June 15, 1960. They were blessed with five children, Karen Ann, Michael Ray, Dian Marie, Julie Kay and Curtis Lee.

The family lived in Hillsboro until 1968 when they moved to a farmstead west of town that stood less than half a mile from his childhood home. Raymond spent countless hours working on the farm until he retired in 1997.

The most important elements in his life were his family, his community and his faith. Raymond remained an active member of St. John Lutheran Church throughout his life. He drove school bus for many years and was an ardent supporter of Hillsboro High School athletics. Raymond will be remembered for his tenacious faith, his love of family, his persistent work ethic and his quiet sense of humor.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Margaret (Fred) Behnke, Henry (Orrel) Schlichtmann, Walter (Ina) Schlichtmann, Dorothy (Fred) Hintz, Lois (Daniel) Maisel, Vivian O’Donnell, Herbert Schlichtmann, Eleanor (Kenneth) Ydstie, Ruth (Vernon) Rust and Shirley (John) Taylor, and great-granddaughter Elisia Morris.

Raymond is survived by his wife Sharon; children Karen Schmidt, Michael (Mardi) Schlichtmann, Dian Schlichtmann, Julie (Timothy) Morris and Curtis (Natalie) Schlichtmann; grandchildren Sara (Tarrington) Rivers, Rachel Schmidt and Erika Schmidt, Kayla (Michael) Tufte, Morgan Schlichtmann and Adam Schlichtmann, Andrew (Anna) Morris, Aaron Morris and Caleb Morris, Emma Schlichtmann and Charles Schlichtmann; great-grandchildren Tarrington Jr. and Tylan Rivers, Judah and Samuel Morris.

Visitation for Raymond was held Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020, from 4 to 7 p.m. and will be held Friday, Oct. 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at St. John Lutheran Church in Hillsboro with funeral services to follow at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Interment at Bohnsack Cemetery will immediately follow the funeral. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the family kindly requests all attendees wear masks and lunch will not be provided following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church or Sanford Health Foundation – Hillsboro.
