A natural gas pipeline under construction in eastern Traill County could pay dividends for Hillsboro and the surrounding area sooner than anticipated.

Jim Murphy, executive director of the Traill County Economic Development Commission, told board members Dec. 17 that Hillsboro was one of five potential sites under consideration for an unidentified commercial venture in the region.

The city would not have been under consideration as a potential business site if Dakota Natural Gas had not started construction of its planned $8.5 million pipeline to Hillsboro and Mayville, he said.

The introduction of natural gas to Hillsboro “brought the project back from the dead,” Murphy said.
