The Mayville-Portland Economic Development Corp. on May 4 awarded $34,200 in beautification grants to 11 businesses in Mayville and Portland to help them spruce up their properties.
The list of grant recipients included downtown icons such as Soholt Bakery and the Delchar Theater, as well as the Mayville Park District, which has been working to introduce pickleball courts in Mayville.
Roger Baier, who serves on MPEDC’s board of directors, said the board attempted to hand out some level of financial assistance to every business or organization that applied for a beautification grant.
“We had some (businesses) that asked for landscaping and some for shrubs, but everyone is going to be getting something,” Baier said.
One of the largest grants was given to Janet Holt, the owner of Soholt Bakery at 40 Main St. E.
Holt had requested $10,000, or half the $20,000 estimated price tag, to pay for a facelift to the exterior of her century-old bakery building and build a ramp to allow wheelchair access into the bakery.
