BUXTON – The Buxton City Council may seek donations from the public to help pay for a flag memorial honoring the city’s late mayor, who passed away in December.

Council members reviewed preliminary cost estimates Wednesday to purchase shrubs and lighted commercial-grade flag poles that would be placed outside the welcome sign on the east side of Buxton.

The poles would bear the U.S. and North Dakota flags in honor of Gene Rosholt, a military veteran and former Buxton mayor who served the city for more than 30 years.

Mayor Travis Soderberg, who was appointed to replace Rosholt in January, said the city would be charged about $8,500 for four lighted flag poles if council members wanted to put poles at the welcome signs on the eastern and western edges of the city.

However, the cost should be split if the council opted to start small with one set of poles on the eastern outskirts of Buxton, he said.
