Twenty doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for kids ages 5 to 11 will be available from Traill District Health Unit starting next week, the agency’s director said Wednesday.

Brenda Stallman said local health officials have been attempting to gauge parents’ interest in the shots for their kids after the federal Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization of the children’s vaccine on Oct. 30.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel signed off on Pfizer’s COVID-19 youth vaccine Tuesday, clearing the way for health care workers to begin administering the shots this week.

“We’ve only been offered a very small allotment – 20 doses – so we won’t be able to give them out at a drop of a hat” until supplies are more readily available, Stallman said Wednesday.
