Despite warnings about a financial “mess,” Hillsboro commissioners moved forward Tuesday with several planned expenditures for 2021.
City Auditor Ashley Frederick told commissioners that she is working with state officials on the 2019 audit and discrepancies have been uncovered.
Frederick became city auditor in September, replacing Matt Mutzenberger, who was fired in July 2020 after two years on the job.
Frederick said: “It’s a mess and we’re trying to fix it.”
She admitted that the city books were “not clear-cut finances.”
Fixing things has involved a line-by-line reconciliation with bank records, she added.
