The city of Hillsboro’s planning and zoning commission approved a building permit for a downtown micro-brewery Monday, a week after questions were raised about the legality of a previously signed permit for the project.
Hillsboro City Commission President Terry Sando, one of the investors in Goose River Brewing behind a planned 15-barrel microbrewery at 20 W. Caledonia Ave., defended the signing of the original permit by City Commissioner Mike Kress, who leads the planning and zoning commission.
Sando said Kress had been “thrown under the bus” at a Dec. 7 city meeting by City Commissioner Levi Reese, who questioned why the original building permit for the project had been signed by Kress on Nov. 16 but never voted on by the full planning and zoning commission.
Hillsboro’s mayor said Monday that Kress had signed building permits for a number of other projects in 2020 without official votes from the planning and zoning commission and Sando reiterated that he hadn’t received special treatment from Kress for the previous permit.
