Citing concerns over the spread of COVID-19, organizers have canceled this year’s Veterans Day program that had been scheduled Nov. 10 at the Hillsboro Events Center.

Hillsboro VFW Commander Rich Gehrke spoke Wednesday morning with Hillsboro Public Schools Superintendent Paula Suda and announced the cancellation shortly after their phone conversation.

“It sounds like the COVID numbers are up at the school and so we decided to cancel,” Gehrke said. “We were on the same page. We don’t want to risk anything or see the numbers (blow up).”

Hillsboro Elementary School Principal Jon Dryburgh issued a text to parents around 1 p.m. Wednesday indicating the school had students test positive for COVID-19.

In his text, Dryburgh said students were recommended to start the school year wearing masks and added that it “seems wise to follow this recommendation until Thanksgiving” to slow the spread of the virus inside the school.
