Fewer people were living in Traill County in 2020 than in 2010, according to population estimates recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Census figures made available Thursday, Aug. 12 show Traill County had 7,997 residents in 2020, marking a 1.5 percent drop from the county’s population of 8,121 residents 10 years earlier.

Jim Murphy, executive director of the Traill County Economic Development Commission, said the census figures aren’t necessary good news for the county.

However, Murphy said Hillsboro, Mayville and Hatton have housing developments in the works that will set the stage for growth in those communities the next few years.

“A negative number is never a win. Our numbers need to be going in the other direction,” Murphy said Tuesday. “But we are taking steps to make sure we see positive growth in the future.”
