An $8.5 million natural gas pipeline being built in Traill County by Dakota Natural Gas could connect to the American Crystal Sugar plant north of Hillsboro by Aug. 1, company officials announced.

Nikki Kupser, who oversees business development for Dakota Natural Gas, issued a release Monday saying crews have been working diligently to finish the 40 to 50 miles of underground pipe needed to bring natural gas from Minnesota to homes and businesses in Hillsboro and Mayville this fall.

In a follow-up interview, Kupser revealed the company has solidified plans to extend its gas pipeline from Mayville to the city of Portland in 2022 – and crews may not stop there.

“Portland is a done deal,” Kupser said Monday morning. “And we are still looking at Hatton and putting numbers together there” for a possible pipeline expansion.
