Kari Tweten, Lance Podoll and George Blum

Three new teachers will make their debuts in the Hillsboro School District on the first day of classes Tuesday. The trio includes, from left, elementary strategist Kari Tweten, high school strategist Lance Podoll and social studies teacher George Blum.

George Blum’s grandfather wanted his grandson to become a math teacher so badly that he paid the Nebraska eighth-grader to solve math problems over his summer vacation.

Blum didn’t end up following in his granddad’s footsteps as a math instructor.

However, the 26-year-old Howells, Neb., native did develop a passion for teaching like his grandfather.

Blum will mark his first day on the job as a history and social studies teacher at Hillsboro High School when fall classes resume Tuesday, joining two other instructors – Lance Podoll and Kari Tweten – making their teaching debuts in the district.
