Hillsboro City Commission

Discussions at the Hillsboro City Commission meeting turned a little trashy Tuesday night as city leaders debated how to clamp down on illegal dumping at the city’s inert waste landfill northwest of town.

Hillsboro City Commission President Levi Reese presented a two-page landfill access agreement to fellow city leaders Tuesday proposing changes to how the landfill can be accessed.

The agreement spells out which materials are prohibited from being deposited at the landfill and requires city employees to inspect and sign off on the discarded items before residents leave the city to unload those materials.

Reese said a state health inspector recently toured the landfill, which previously had been an active disposal site used by the city but now accepts only certain inert waste items.
