Residents in the Hillsboro School District will be mailed a survey in January asking them to weigh in on ongoing talks centered around building a new high school in Hillsboro.

Representatives from Icon Architectural Group told a school committee Tuesday that the firm’s survey will provide a snapshot into how much taxpayers are willing to spend to update Hillsboro’s schools.

“It’s very important to make sure with what we’re doing that everyone is on board with it,” said Todd Blixt, an architect with the Grand Forks-based firm.

Blixt and Kyle Kvamme, Icon’s director of project development, spent two hours with committee members Tuesday discussing construction costs and the tax implications tied to building a new school on vacant land the district owns southeast of Hillsboro Elementary School.

The Hillsboro School Board earlier this month agreed to call a special election – which could be coming in January – asking voters to increase the district’s debt limit from 5 percent to 10 percent.
