Former Hillsboro teacher and North Dakota’s oldest resident Iris Westman died Sunday at the age of 115.
Westman was the second-oldest person in the United States prior to her death at Northwood Deaconess Health Center’s nursing home.
She taught English in Hillsboro beginning in the 1940s before moving to Minnesota, where she served as an elementary school librarian until her retirement in 1972.
Larry Aasen, a Hillsboro High school graduate of 1941, said Westman was a caring teacher who loved her students.
Westman once gave Aasen a dime when he had no money so he could hang out with friends at Gilly’s Pool Hall in Hillsboro.
“Iris Westman was a different kind of teacher,” Aasen told the Hillsboro Banner in 2016.
Westman was born Aug. 28, 1905 and grew up on a farm near Aneta, N.D.
