Administrators in the MayPort-CG School District reported a surge in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 present at Peter Boe Jr. Elementary School on Monday.

Elementary Principal Billie Soholt told the MayPort-CG School Board Monday night that 41 kids in grades K-5 were absent from class earlier in the day and 14 students and three teachers had tested positive for COVID-19.

Six MPCG third-graders – or 17 percent of the class – were identified as virus carriers, triggering an automatic masking protocol outlined in the district’s K-12 Smart Restart plan for the class, she said.

School officials fielded a pair of phone calls from parents over the unexpected virus spike, Soholt said.

“One was concerned about sending their child to (school) and one was not happy about needing to mask,” she said. “That is kind of where we’re at.”
