The Traill County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved hiring a Wisconsin-based consulting firm to evaluate the county’s future jail needs.

Commissioners agreed to spend $21,900 to hire the Samuels Group, a Wausau, Wis., company that has been working with Walsh County to study the construction of a correctional facility in Grafton.

Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt and County Commission Chair Larry Young of Mayville attended a multi-county meeting in Grafton a few weeks ago to review Walsh County’s efforts to build a new jail.

Hunt reminded county leaders Tuesday that Traill County’s 13-bed jail hasn’t been used since 2020.

Sheriff’s deputies have been transporting inmates to correctional facilities in nearby Walsh, Barnes, Ramsey and Richland counties in most cases and Grand Forks and Cass counties on occasion, he said.
