Larry Aasen

Larry Aasen, a Hillsboro native and Hillsboro High School alum who authored four books filled with stories about growing up and life in his home state of North Dakota, died Sunday.

Aasen, 99, passed away in a Norwalk, Conn., hospital from complications stemming from COVID-19, according an obituary prepared by his family.

A 1941 Hillsboro High School graduate, Aasen went on to attend North Dakota State University in Fargo until 1943, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a sergeant in the 13th Airborne Division and served in France, where he was tasked with decoding secret messages for his country.
