Tim Bauer’s third time participating in the Tuscobia Winter Ultra was his most ambitious effort yet.
The 67-year-old pastor at United Parish Church in Hillsboro was one of 30 men and women from across the United States and Canada who attempted a 160-mile run from Rice Lake, Wis., to Park Falls, Wis., and back last weekend.
However, trail conditions forced Bauer to pull out of the event after 17 miles in temperatures around 15 degrees.
“It was just the surface,” said Bauer of Moorhead.
“If the snow isn’t packed decently, it’s a lot more energy to get through.”
This year, only four of the 30 participants completed the three-day trek, which began at 6 a.m. on New Years Eve, along the Tuscobia Trail.
