The owners of the Hillsboro Cafe permanently closed their doors this week and announced their intentions to sell the downtown restaurant after a four-year stint in Hillsboro.
Derek and Kate Ehnert revealed in a Facebook post shortly after 6:30 a.m. Sunday that they planned to seek new ownership for the family-run restaurant at 3 N. Main St.
“This decision was not an easy one to make,” the couple posted. “There is a tremendous amount of blood, sweat, tears, and so much love that has gone into building a successful business.
“A business that has made us proud and, almost more importantly, has made you proud.”
Kate Ehnert said Wednesday that the couple initially decided to remain open through Thanksgiving but ultimately agreed to shut their doors and seek new owners sooner than expected.
The popular Main Street lunch spot may have a “bakery cleanout” at some point, but the cafe officially marked its final day as a sit-down restaurant in Hillsboro on Tuesday, she said.
