NORTHWOOD, N.D. – Hillsboro-Central Valley girls cross-country coach Kirk Zink knows his team well.

The four H-CV athletes who ran in the Aug. 29 Northwood Invitational have been running under Zink’s watch for the last handful of years.

“I know when mentally they feel good, physically they feel good and I know when they don’t,” Zink said Tuesday. “I don’t mean it in a negative way but they all looked tired and we expected them to be.

“We use some of (our early meets) as good, hard organized practices. And this one happened to be a hard organized practice where they were tired (from Wednesday’s two practices). And then you throw three, four, five good hills in and it was a good, tough day for them.”

The No. 2-ranked Burros earned a fifth-place finish at the meet with 124 points while Grafton won the team title with 71 points.

Senior Reagan Baesler finished second behind Langdon Area-Edmore-Munich’s Elise Ramberg with a time of 20:00.
