Sam Preston could’ve easily checked out of his round Monday at the Northern Cass Invite.

The Hillsboro-Central Valley sophomore took a nine on a par-5 hole en route to a 45 front-nine score.

Instead of dwelling on the bad hole, Preston turned it around and fired a 3-over par 39 on the back nine at Maple River Golf Course.

“I thought Sam did a really good job of bouncing back after a couple of really tough holes on the front,” H-CV head coach Ryan Nielsen said about Preston’s 12-over par 84.

“When his mindset is right, he’s so much better. If we can get him to stay that way, he will be good the rest of the way.”

The Burros finished third at the meet with a score of 330. Kindred won the team title with a 292 and Oak Grove earned a runner-up finish with a 314.
