North Dakota has canceled multiple summer all-star games amid ongoing fears from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, five boards representing the same number of all-star events officially canceled their upcoming summer games, including the North Dakota Shrine Bowl, the Scheels North Dakota Softball All-Star Series and the Lions All-Star basketball games.

Consisting of 9- and 11-man football games, the Shrine Bowl, which raises money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, was scheduled to be played July 18 in Mayville.

This cancellation will mark the first time the event has been called off since its inaugural game in 1974.

Bill Lorenz, chairman of the 10-member Shrine Bowl committee and Grand Forks Central High School football coach, said the committee had been trying to come up with a way to get the game played for more than a month prior to the cancellation.
