Elliot Rotvold was unsure how his rendition of The Star Spangled Banner would be received Tuesday.

Based on his team’s reaction, the Hillsboro-Central Valley boys basketball coach may want to go on tour.

Rotvold sang the national anthem and his squad, roused from the singing, cruised to a 62-46 win over Region 2 rival Thompson at the Hillsboro Events Center.

“It kind of got the crowd fired up and the guys were excited about it,” the coach said with a chuckle. “I haven’t sang it in about four years so I figured it was time to pull it out.”

Rotvold, who admitted he was a little nervous by the singing, said he was so wrapped up in the performance that he forgot to give players their defensive assignments before the game.

It mattered little, as the ninth-ranked Burros held the No. 7 Tommies to 22 first-half points in the win.

H-CV senior point guard Carson Henningsgard finished with 32 points and was 6 of 9 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half.

“We played good, solid defense. That’s what got us started,” Rotvold said. “Then Carson got hot from three there. He was feeling it.”
