Hillsboro-Central Valley seniors Luke Leshuk and Gavin Wright stood atop the podium at last Saturday’s Region 2 individual tournament in Casselton, N.D.

With region championships under their belts, the duo is hoping to add more hardware to their trophy cases at this weekend’s state wrestling tournament.

Leshuk has the No. 2 seed at 126 pounds and Wright is seeded fourth at 182 for state, which began Thursday at the Fargodome.

After winning the East-West tournament at New Salem, N.D. Feb. 1, Leshuk made a case to be the No. 1 seed at state, but was passed over for Kindred’s Carter Schmitz.

The Viking wrestler has topped Leshuk in the past but the two have not faced each other this season.

“I think Luke knows where he stands,” said Burros co-head coach Andrew Grothmann. “I think Luke’s a different wrestler his senior year.

“He’s capable of working his way through the tournament, regardless what seed he is.”
