FARGO –  Hillsboro-Central Valley softball head coach Cory Erickson told his team that Central Cass may have been the No. 1 team throughout the season.

But his Burros squad just needed to be No. 1 for one night against the Squirrels in a semifinal game at the Class B state softball tournament at Tharaldson Park in Fargo.

H-CV was one out away from edging the defending state champions for a title-game berth, but fell 4-3 in a heartbreaking loss to Central Cass May 31.

“Honestly, I think we played like the No. 1 team in the state Friday,” Erickson said. “That was awfully cool to see.”

After being outscored by the Squirrels, 39-5 in two regular-season contests, H-CV gave the four-time state champions all they could handle.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Burros had a 3-2 advantage.
