Mayville Post 8 began its quest for the 2019 State Class B Legion Tournament title Wednesday in Hazen, N.D., with a 13-3 victory over Burlington.

The win set up a contest with the Fargo Bombers on Thursday in the semifinals and left the Patriots two victories away from their first Legion championship since 2001.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we can win,” Mayville head coach Taylor Kunkel said Monday. “The boys have a good mindset on them and got the momentum rolling. That’ll help us quite a bit.”

The Patriots scored nine runs in the fourth inning to open the game after trailing Burlington 2-1 early Wednesday.

In other action Wednesday, the Bombers beat Hettinger 6-5. Thompson downed Surrey 4-1 and Carrington raced past host Hazen 12-2.

Hillsboro-Reynolds Post 4 head coach Nathan Walsh said Tuesday that the Patriots should have success at state.

Mayville beat the Blue Sox 5-4 in the semis of the District 6 tournament July 24.

“Mayville has a good group of kids that play well together and are having a great time doing it,” Walsh said.

“Their coach has them doing the right things and they have a confidence about them.”
