On the first day of practice in previous years, Hillsboro-Central Valley cross-country coach Kirk Zink had a good idea who his top six runners were.

He didn’t get that sense when the Burros started practice Monday for the 2019 season.

“We have a pretty good idea who our top three are going to be,” Zink said Tuesday.

“But who the four, five and six (runners) are? That could literally be any of five, six, seven or eight girls.”

There are 17 girls out for cross country this fall led by H-CV’s three-time individual state champion, who’s gearing up for her final season.
